Career Pathways Exchange Virtual Chat: Write Your Way into a Career in Journalism & Media

Have you thought about exploring your love for writing and transforming that passion into a career? On Tuesday, October 26th, Alumni Engagement Manager and Cooke Scholar Alum Larry Thi hosted a panel discussion with fellow Alums Danna Lorch, Jerry Mathes, Monique Madan, and Shani Am. Moore. In this lively and informative conversation, you'll learn about the journalism and media industries’ landscapes and how one can become a successful journalist, freelance writer, author, or screenwriter.

The panelists shared these resources and opportunities during the virtual chat:

  • PEN America’s Writing for Justice Fellowship commissions writers — emerging or established — to create written works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate.

  • Rehabilitation Through the Arts helps people in prison develop critical life skills through the arts, modeling an approach to the justice system based on human dignity rather than punishment.

  • Gotham Writers Workshop is a creative home in New York City and Online where writers develop their craft and come together in the spirit of discovery and fellowship.

  • Script Anatomy is a screenwriting school and community based in Los Angeles. Since 2011 we’ve helped thousands of screenwriters develop their craft, break into the industry and sustain successful careers.

  • Inevitable Foundation fellowships advance the careers and projects of mid-career disabled screenwriters.

  • Binders Full of Digital Journalists & Binders Full of Writing Jobs - Facebook groups for female-identifying journalists or aspiring journalists. Great resources for those looking for mentors, tips, or calls for pitches.
