Melissa Osborne
2010 Undergraduate Transfer Scholar, 2013 Graduate Scholar, University of Chicago
Melissa’s book, Polished: College, Class, and the Burdens of Social Mobility, was recently published from The University of Chicago Press. Their book is an ethnography that draws on in-depth interviews with one hundred and fifty first-generation and low-income students across eighteen elite institutions. Polished uncovers the hidden consequences of the promise of social mobility in today’s educational landscape. Melissa reveals how the very support designed to propel first-generation students forward can unexpectedly reshape their identities, often putting them at odds with their peers and families. Without direct institutional support, this emotional journey can lead to alienation, mental health challenges, poor academic outcomes, and difficult choices between upward mobility or maintaining authenticity and community.
Melissa shared, “As a first-gen and first time author I am excited for the publication of this book and hope it will help shed light on the deep impacts of social mobility. More than anything I am excited for fellow Scholars and first-gen students to read the book and hope that it resonates with their experiences."

Katie McKeown
2010 Young Scholar, 2015 College Scholar, 2019 Graduate Scholar, University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa
Dr. Katie McKeown just completed her PhD in Mathematics from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Her dissertation was titled, Academic Resources and Precalculus Students: Knowledge and Use of Tutoring Services, Skill Sessions, and Academic Coaching.
“The process of studying for and passing (after multiple attempts) qualifying exams as well as preparing for and completing my dissertation is something I know I will never be able to fully describe in words,” said Katie. “There were highs, but it felt like mostly lows, at the time. It was unlike anything I could have expected, in all ways, as a first-generation college student. I am beyond grateful to have had the support system I did throughout the process as well as for my belief in myself; having this PhD in Mathematics, I know, will open up a world of opportunities to me that I never could have imagined.”
